Weekend Educational Course:
Clinical MRI: From Physical Principles to Practical Protocols
Organizers: Andrew J. Kiruluta, Ph.D. and Joshua S. Shimony, M.D., Ph.D.

Skill Level: Basic

Sunday, 19 April 2009
08:30 - 17:00

OVERVIEW
This one day program will begin with a basic overview of MR physics. Then, over the course of the day, MDs will use physiological principles and case examples to illustrate the impact of protocol choices in real world settings. Physics speakers will build on these examples by explaining the underlying principles of MR physics that explain the protocol choices. The presentation will be an integrated series of lectures, to illustrate protocol choices and trouble shooting tips.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this case based session, participants should be able to:
  • Describe routine clinical protocols on a system-by-system basis;
  • Compare basic imaging protocols for the top MR imaging indications in the routine clinical setting (keeping in mind alternative imaging strategies);
  • Troubleshoot and avoid common pitfalls of these protocols;
  • Demonstrate an integrated understanding of the underlying MR physics behind clinical protocols; and
  • Describe new impact areas in MR imaging, such as high fields and parallel acquisition, and their influence on clinical protocol design issues.
