SUNRISE EDUCATIONAL COURSE
MR Spectroscopy & Spectroscopic Imaging
ORGANIZERS: Daniel M. Spielman, Ph.D. & Ivan Tkac, Ph.D.

SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate

OVERVIEW
This four-hour course will be focused on the methodology of advanced MRS and MRSI techniques and their applications in studying the brain metabolism in humans and animal models. Our primary goal of the course is to demonstrate the potential of these new spectroscopy techniques (data acquisition and processing) to extend the available neurochemical information and to improve its reliability. The second goal is to highlight and discuss the complementary roles of MRS and MRSI. The third goal is focused on benefits and challenges of spectroscopy at high magnetic fields. Last but not least, possibilities of MRS and MRSI in the clinical practice will be included.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course participants should be able to:
Identify problems and challenges of high field MRS and MRSI;
Recognize pros and cons of MRS vs. MRSI;
Identify appropriate processing tools for metabolite quantification;
Define neurochemical profiles detectable by MRS;
Interpret neurochemical information provided by MRS; and
Recognize the gap between research and clinical MRS and MRSI.

AUDIENCE DESCRIPTION
Because of the aim of this course to bridge the gap between the research possibilities and clinical availability of advanced MRS and MRSI, the course will be designed both for physicist and neuroscientists as well as for radiologists and neurologists.
