WEEKEND EDUCATIONAL COURSE
Measuring Diffusion Properties in Tissue
ORGANIZERS: Karla L. Miller, Ph.D. & Jacques-Donald Tournier, Ph.D.

SKILL LEVEL: Basic-Intermediate
Saturday, 5 May 2012

OVERVIEW
This half-day course is designed for scientists and clinicians who are interested in a relatively non-technical, yet scientifically rigorous, overview of diffusion MRI. Attendees will learn about diffusion imaging acquisition, modeling and tractography analysis, and the biophysical interpretation of diffusion data. This course will provide a framework for setting up diffusion studies and interpreting results, as well as providing a glimpse of future techniques that may supplant current state-of-the art methods. The course can be taken on its own, but is designed to complement courses on “MR Properties of Tissue” (Saturday afternoon) and “Microstructural Imaging Techniques in the Brain” (Sunday morning).

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course participants should be able to:
Identify the methods used to acquire diffusion data and describe the limitations of state-of-the-art techniques;
Recognize the biophysical effects the diffusion tensor can encapsulate and the problems associated with interpreting tensor-derived metrics;
Explain the basic concepts behind diffusion tractography, including best practice for anatomical investigations;
Describe several alternative descriptions of orientation dependence of diffusion data;
Identify the biophysical sources of alterations in diffusion properties and discuss the potential information that these properties could reveal about tissue microstructure; and
Recognize potential future clinical applications of these techniques as technology improves.

AUDIENCE DESCRIPTION
The target audience for this course is scientists and clinicians who are starting to work in the field of diffusion MRI and would like to have an overview of the scientific and technical underpinnings of these techniques. The course assumes basic previous knowledge of MRI, but not necessarily familiarity with diffusion imaging acquisition and analysis.
