ISMRM 21st Annual Meeting & Exhibition 20-26 April 2013 Salt Lake City, Utah, USA

WEEKDAY EDUCATIONAL COURSE
New Advances in Neurodegenerative Disease
SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate to Advanced
ORGANIZERS: Pratik Mukherjee, M.D., Ph.D. & Maria A. Rocca, M.D.
Monday, 22 April 2013

OVERVIEW
This session is designed to teach the audience about new advances in neurodegenerative diseases. The first speaker, Dr. Kauwe, will provide an overview of new advances in genomics and proteomics of Alzheimer Disease. The second speaker, Dr. Brewer, will address how structural morphometry from MRI has helped characterize brain atrophy patterns in neurodegenerative diseases. The third speaker, Dr. Raj, will show how brain atrophy patterns in neurodegenerative diseases can be predicted from the structural connectome of the human brain. The final speaker, Dr. Henry, will demonstrate how diffusion MRI has aided in the diagnosis of rapidly progressive dementias, especially prion disease.

TARGET AUDIENCE
MD's and PhD's with an interest in the latest advances in neurogenerative disorders, including genetics, molecular pathogenesis, approaches to clinical diagnosis, as well as structural MRI, MR connectomics and diffusion-weighted MRI.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the changes in cortical thickness and regional brain volumes seen in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer disease (AD)
  • Recognize how current advances in mapping whole-brain structural networks enables predictive models of neurodegenerative disease progression; and
  • Appraise the use of modern MR techniques such as diffusion imaging for the accurate diagnosis of rapidly progressive dementias, including prion diseases.
