ISMRM 21st Annual Meeting & Exhibition 20-26 April 2013 Salt Lake City, Utah, USA

WEEKEND EDUCATIONAL COURSE
Everything You Wanted to Know about MR-PET
SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate to Advanced
ORGANIZERS: Roland Bammer, Ph.D. & Marco Essig, M.D., Ph.D.
Sunday, 21 April 2013
08:00-11:55

OVERVIEW
This half-day weekend course will first introduce MR scientists and clinicians to the exciting field of Positron Emission Tomography (PET). Specifically, hardware requirements, PET image reconstruction and PET-tracer production will be discussed. Thereafter, attendees will learn how to integrate a PET ring inside an MRI machine, its mutual challenges, and what needs to be done to hardware and reconstruction software to make both systems work independently and without interference. The second half of this course will focus on opportunities of MR-PET in drug research and clinical applications in oncology, neurology and the neurosciences, body imaging and cardio-pulmonary imaging.

TARGET AUDIENCE
Research scientists and clinicians – including trainees – who either conduct research in hybrid imaging or (plan to) use MR-PET for clinical studies. The course assumes no background in PET and only basic MR physics and technical knowledge.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Assess the key components of a PET system and PET image reconstruction;
  • Prepare for the challenges for operating both PET and MRI simultaneously;
  • Describe the basic radiochemistry principles and common PET tracers;
  • Assess logistical limitations and new opportunities with a combined PET-MR system; and
  • Evaluate current and future uses of PET-MR in the clinics and research.
