Joint Annual Meeting ISMRM-ESMRMB 2014 10-16 May 2014 Milan, Italy

WEEKEND EDUCATIONAL COURSE
Ultra-High Magnetic Field Diffusion, Perfusion & Functional MRI
SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate to Advanced
ORGANIZERS: Kamil Uludag, Ph.D. & Kawin Setsompop, Ph.D.
Sunday, 11 May 2014 (13:30 - 17:00)

OVERVIEW
This course deals with advanced human brain imaging approaches at ultra-high magnetic field. In particular, Diffusion, Perfusion (ASL) and Functional MRI at 7 Tesla and higher will be presented, each from two different perspectives. All these techniques provide insight into anatomy and function of the brain at an unprecedented level of detail albeit with many technological and data analysis challenges. The talks of this course will show how to overcome these challenges and provide results showing the enormous potential of ultra-high field for human brain imaging.

TARGET AUDIENCE
Physicists, technologists, radiologist, clinicians, and neuroscientists who wish to know the current state-of-the art of ultra-high field Diffusion, Perfusion (ASL) and Functional MRI applied to understanding brain structure function and disease, from data acquisition to analysis. Each of these MRI modalities poses their unique challenges and opportunities and the audience will learn how to effectively solve the technological and data analysis problems. This course requires prior knowledge of these modalities at standard clinical field strength (1.5 and 3 Tesla).

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the limits of human brain imaging at 1.5 and 3 Tesla;
  • Identify the challenges specific to ultra-high field Diffusion, Perfusion (ASL) and Functional MRI;
  • Assess MRI sequence and hardware approaches in order to solve these problems;
  • Evaluate and implement data analysis problems associated with data from ultra-high fields; and
  • Recognize the benefits for studying brain in healthy and diseased subjects.
