Sunrise Educational Session: High-Throughput: The 5 Minute MR Scan

Skill Level: Intermediate

Organizers: Garry E. Gold, M.D. & Joshua D. Trzasko, Ph.D.

Tuesday 10 May 2016

Overview
MRI is a powerful and flexible imaging modality. However, long scan duration and protocol lists limit the amount of information than can be collected in a clinically reasonable time window. In this course, clinicians and scientists will discuss their visions for a 5-minute comprehensive MRI exam. Each lecture will focus on a different MRI application, identify what information is critical for diagnosis (and what isn’t), and overview technical strategies for obtaining this information as rapidly as possible.

Target Audience
This educational session targets both scientists and clinicians interested in the development and application of rapid comprehensive MRI techniques. The discussion about both technical and clinical aspects of different areas of MRI is intended to provide a broad perspective about rapid MRI, and promote translations of concepts and strategies between areas. Although no specific MRI area expertise is required, a general understanding of the different requirements and goals of different MRI areas, and appreciation of MRI physics and technology, will maximize the benefit from this course.

Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the needs for rapid imaging in different clinical applications;
  • Identify what types of information are most important for diagnosis;
  • Identify the potential for reducing the number of protocols in an exam;
  • Understand technical challenges with, and solutions to, rapid imaging; and
  • Appreciate the potential compromises in developing application-specific rapid protocols.
