Educational Session: Advanced Techniques in Pediatric Neuroimaging

Educational Course

ORGANIZERS: Christopher D. Smyser, M.D.

Thursday, 27 April 2017
Room 316A  13:00 - 15:00 Moderators: Silvina Ferradal, Chris Smyser

Skill Level: Intermediate

Slack Channel: #e_neuro
Session Number: Th03

Overview
This course focuses upon application of advanced neuroimaging modalities to study pediatric populations. The session begins by discussing methodological challenges unique to this population. Approaches and results from investigations employing surface-based morphometry and volumetrics, diffusion tensor imaging and functional MRI will then be discussed.

Target Audience
MD's, PhD's and trainees who are interested in applying advanced neuroimaging techniques, including functional MRI, diffusion tensor imaging and high-resolution anatomic imaging, to study normal neurodevelopment and pediatric clinical populations of interest.

Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

-Describe state-of-the-art approaches for addressing methodological challenges unique to studying pediatric populations;
-Discuss results from recent investigations employing advanced neuroimaging techniques to study pediatric subjects; and
-Apply emerging imaging techniques to better address multidisciplinary problems in pediatric neuroscience.

Unique Methodological Challenges in Pediatric Neuroimaging
Duan Xu
This educational session will introduce and discuss challenges for brain imaging of pediatric subjects.  A brief overview of key differences between the developing brain and adult brain will be discussed.  The presentation will be address logistics of patient handling, image acquisition, post-processing techniques and analyses for improved characterization of the maturing brain.  Translational studies will also be presented to highlight the importance of advancing pediatric brain imaging not only in research but also in clinical care, and further identify the area of needs to spur interests from the audience.
