Longitudinal magnetization is the projection of the vector of net magnetization in the direction of the static magnetic field (B0). It is highest when spins are aligned in thermal equilibrium in Z-direction and zero when spins are flipped fully in the transversal plane (i.e. from a 90° excitation pulse).
