Excerpt from SMRT Bylaws re Awards Committee

Article VII, Section M

The Awards Committee shall be responsible for the selection of the Awards bestowed by the Section. It shall be chaired by the Immediate Past President of the Section and consist of seven (7) other members of the Section, one (1) of whom shall be the President. Of the six (6) other members, three (3) shall be current Policy Board Members and three (3) shall be chosen from the Section’s active membership with preference to past award recipients.

The Awards Committee shall be responsible for:

1. Recommending the names of candidates for the Crues-Kressel Award;

2. Recommending the names of candidates for Honorary Membership of the Section to the Executive Committee [see Article IV];

3. Recommending the names of the Distinguished Service Award winners (if any) of the Section to the Executive Committee. This award shall be given for outstanding contributions to the operation, effectiveness, or good reputation of the Section;

4. Selecting the names of those who are to be Fellows of the Section for approval by the Executive Committee. It may select names of its own choosing or as a result of a petition sponsored by no fewer than five (5) existing active members submitted to the Section Office [see Article IV].

Article IV, Section E & F

E. Fellows of the Section

Fellows of the Section may be appointed by the Policy Board on the recommendation of the Awards Committee, either initiated by the Awards Committee itself or by a petition signed by no less than five (5) of the existing voting members, from those Members who have made a significant and substantial contribution. Fellows shall be treated as, and shall have all the rights and privileges (including voting and Membership sponsor rights) of Voting Members as well as the distinction this recognition confers; however, they shall be required to meet their obligations as Voting Members as defined in Article IV to retain their status as Fellows.

E. Honorary Members of the Section

Honorary Membership may be conferred by invitation of the Policy Board upon the nomination of the Awards Committee of the SMRT. It shall be awarded in recognition of major achievements in the field of magnetic resonance. All Honorary Members shall also be treated as, and shall have all the rights and privileges of Voting Members; however, they shall be exempt from Membership dues. 

Standard Operating Procedures

A. Charge to the Committee

As indicated in the bylaws, the Awards Committee is responsible for the recommendation of the recipients of the major awards bestowed by the Section. The Awards Committee is chaired by the immediate Past-President. Responsibilities include recommendation to the SMRT Executive Committee and Policy Board of selected name(s) of candidate(s) for:

1. Crues-Kressel Award

2. Honorary Membership

3. Distinguished Service Award

4. Fellows of the Section

Nominations for these awards can come from the membership submitting names to the Awards Committee or directly from the Awards Committee.

An individual can be nominated for a maximum of one (1) award per year.

The Section’s awards are traditionally presented at the Business Meeting held during the Annual Meeting of the SMRT and announced in the following SMRT newsletter, Signals. The Committee may recommend to forgo an award if it so chooses; Policy Board approval will be required.

B. Nomination and Selection Process

1. Crues-Kressel Award

Final selection: Vote by the SMRT Membership on the October ballot.

Maximum length of term: Not applicable

Maximum number of candidates: Three (3) per year

Maximum number of selected recipients: One (1) per year

Minimum number of selected recipients: Committee is not required to submit any names if there is not an appropriate nominee for that year.

Criteria for selection: Outstanding contributions to the education of MR Technologists.

Eligibility: SMRT membership is not required; should not be a current member of SMRT Executive Committee or Policy Board, or a previous recipient of this award.

Candidates requirement(s): Provide biography for publication on ballot

Deadlines:

• Name of candidate submitted to Awards Committee chair by August 15

• Selection(s) approved by 2/3rds vote of the Awards Committee

• Approved selection(s) submitted to SMRT secretary by September 1

• Committee work completed by September 1

• Name(s) of candidate(s) submitted to Policy Board and Executive Committee members via email ballot for approval by September 15

• The vote by the Board requires a quorum (50% must return ballot) and is by majority for approval or no award is given

• Approved selection submitted to SMRT secretary by September 15.

Maximum number of candidates: One (2) per year

Maximum number of selected recipients: One (1) per year

Minimum number of selected recipients: Committee is not required to submit any names if there is not an appropriate nominee for that year.

Criteria for selection: Awarded in recognition of extraordinary achievement and an exceptional level of service and support for the section and the mission of the SMRT. "Lifetime" award that requires no annual dues.

Eligibility: SMRT membership not required (for example: Radiologist, scientist, vendor, pharmaceutical salesperson, or non-voting or voting SMRT member).

Candidate requirement(s): Provide biography for SMRT Executive Committee and Policy Board

Deadline:

• Name of candidate and brief history or justification submitted to Awards Committee chair by November 15

• Selection approved by 2/3rds vote of the Awards Committee

• Approved selection submitted to SMRT secretary by December 15

• Name and biography is presented on a ballot to the SMRT Policy Board and Executive Committee members by January 15

• The vote by the Board requires a quorum (50% must return ballot) and is by majority for approval or no award is given

• Committee work completed by January 15

• Ballots tallied by February 15 by staff in the Berkeley office.

Award:

• Certificate

• No required annual dues beginning the following January (no journals included)

• Recipient may speak to Membership director in Berkeley office to arrange for purchase of journal subscription(s) separately

• Acts as a voting member

• Announcement at the business meeting of the SMRT Annual Meeting

• Announcement in SMRT newsletter, Signals.

Criteria for selection: Outstanding contributions and level of effort and service to the operation, effectiveness, and good reputation of the Section.

Eligibility: Current SMRT voting member in good standing and not a previous recipient of this award.

Candidate requirement(s): Provide biography for SMRT Executive Committee and Policy Board

Deadline:

• Name of candidate and brief history or justification submitted to Awards Committee chair by November 15

• Selection approved by 2/3rds vote of the Awards Committee

• Approved selection submitted to SMRT secretary by December 15

• Name and biography is presented on a ballot to the SMRT Policy Board and Executive Committee members by January 15.

Maximum number of selected recipients: Two (2) per year

Minimum number of selected recipients: Committee is not required to submit any names if there is not an appropriate nominee for that year.

Criteria for selection: Significant and substantial contributions to the mission of the SMRT over the course of at least five (5) years including participation in the Annual Meetings, Regional Meetings, and Publications, and contributions to the development of the Section. "Lifetime" award (remains SMRT Fellow as long as dues are paid, i.e., member in good standing).

Eligibility: Current SMRT voting member in good standing.

Candidate(s) requirement(s): Provide biography for SMRT Executive Committee and Policy Board

Deadline:

• Name(s) of candidate(s) and brief history or justification submitted to Awards Committee chair by November 15

• Selection(s) approved by 2/3rds vote of the Awards Committee

• Approved selection submitted to SMRT secretary by December 15

• Name(s) and biography(ies) is presented on a ballot to SMRT Policy Board and Executive Committee members by January 15

• The Board will vote for a maximum of two (2) or less (may vote for none)

• The vote by the Board requires a quorum (50% must return ballot) and is by majority for approval or no award is given

• Committee work completed by January 15

• Ballots tallied by February 15 by staff in the Berkeley office.
