MR Techniques in the Evaluation of the Uterus
Volume 4, Number 3

Educational Objectives
Part I: Cervical Cancer

To consider the role of MRI in the staging of cervical cancer.

To review current imaging sequences, techniques, and the use of contrast used to evaluate the cervix, and aid in tumor detection.

To discuss identification of clinically problematic lesions.

To critique the accuracy of MR compared to CT when assessing parametrial and pelvic wall invasion, as well as vaginal, bladder, rectal, and lymph node involvement.

To explain the use of MR in the evaluation of residual tumor and fibrosis.

Part II: T2-Weighted MRI of the Uterus: Fast Spin Echo vs. Breath-Hold Fast Spin Echo

To investigate and compare a routine T2-weighted fast spin echo (T2FSE) sequence with a breath-hold T2FSE (BH T2FSE) sequence of the female pelvis.

To compare the sequences for image quality, uterine anatomy, lesion detection, signal intensity, and artifact.

To familiarize the reader with the equipment and imaging parameters used to obtain both the T2FSE and BH T2FSE sequences.

To discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the T2FSE and BH T2FSE sequences.

Part III: Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Primary Site in Stage I Cervical Carcinoma: A Comparison of Endovaginal Coil With External Phased Array Coil Techniques at 0.5T

To compare endovaginal with pelvic phased array coil magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in detection of Stage I cervical carcinoma by correlating the findings with histopathology.

To review the methods used to investigate the performance of both imaging techniques.

To discuss the utility of the various pulse sequences used with both imaging techniques.

To explain the advantages and disadvantages of both imaging techniques.
