The South Carolina Chapter of the SMRT hosted the Spring Educational Seminar on 09 March 2013 in Greenville, South Carolina, USA. The co-chairs, Wendy Callahan, R.T.(R)(MR), Melonee Elrod, R.T.(R)(M)(CT)(MR), Cindy Hipps, BHS, R.T.(R)(MR), FSMRT and Carol Lee, R.T.(R)(CT)(MR) want to thank Brent Barr, R.T.(R)(MR) from the Greenville Hospital system for helping to make this meeting possible. We started the day with some wonderful local speakers. Jon F. Lucas, M.D., FAAP, FAAC from the Pediatric Cardiology department at the Greenville Hospital System, he gave an excellent talk on Cardiac MRI in Congenital Heart Disease. His talk was very informative for the Technologists who scan cardiac pediatric scans. He talked about congenital heart disease and how MRI is used to assess the pediatric heart. He is very involved with the scanning in Greenville and helpful in obtaining excellent cardiac images. Robert L. Helmer, M.D., M.S. from Upstate Carolina Radiology enlightened us with his presentation on MRI of the Foot and Ankle. He talked about the importance of different parameters in scanning the foot and ankle as well as an overview of the anatomy. Following was John F. Parrott, Jr., M.D. who is also with Upstate Carolina Radiology. He gave a comprehensive talk on MRI of the Skull base. This excellent lecture on scanning the skull base illustrated what is most important when imaging the IAC’s and other anatomy in the skull base. Kathleen Marlatt, R.T.(R)(MR)(M) a local MRI Technologist at St. Francis Eastside in Greenville followed Dr. Parrott. She gave an instructive talk on using MARS for patients with hip and knee replacements. What is MARS you ask? Metal Artifact Reduction Sequences. We all ask about the acronym the first time we hear it. According to the speaker, using this technique is effective, but the scanning takes a little longer.
After everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch we had our first MRI Safety
Forum and Panel Discussion. A snowstorm in the Northeast caused
delays for some of the speakers however, we were fortunate to have
them arrive for the afternoon. It was a beautiful sunny day in the
upstate. SMRT President Vera Kimbrell, B.S.,R.T.(R)(MR) discussed
new and updated information about devices and implants as well as
the future of MRI safety with these devices. Brent Barr, (R)(MR) the
MRI Manager, at the Greenville Hospital System spoke on MRI safety
screening in a Medical Facility. Jim Stuppino, B.S.,R.T. (R)(MR) the
CEO of Animal Scan, LLC, from Pennsylvania, explained the issues
with screening animals for MR scanning and other site specific
safety issues. We want to thank our attendees, speakers and vendors for supporting the South Carolina Chapter of the SMRT. Many attendees stated that this was a great day of education, food and fun and as always, a great time to network with others in our profession. We want to give a big thank you to our vendors, international and local who support us each year. In addition to the usual door prize drawing for attendees who visit the vendor tables; the vendors did a 60 second talk about their product, during the morning break this year. Attendees enjoyed that addition to our day and thought it was very informative. Some vendors were very creative during their 60 seconds. Invivo won the best presentation voted on by the attendees. Mark your calendars so you don’t miss out on our meeting next year. The South Carolina SMRT Educational meeting in 2014 will be held on 1 March, 2014 in Greer, South Carolina, USA. |
