Skill Level: Basic to Intermediate

Tuesday, 21 April 2009 - Friday, 24 April 2009
07:00 - 08:00

OVERVIEW
This four hour course will cover the science of MR safety, and its application to safety management. Topics covered include:
  • SAR
  • Interactions of tissues with low frequency magnetic fields
  • Safe gradient coil design
  • Implants and ASTM labeling standards
  • The new ISO/IEC standard for active implants
  • Accidents
  • The risks of acoustic noise

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this case based session, participants should be able to:
  • Explain the issues involved in setting the SAR limit for a pulse sequence;
  • List the causes of PNS and how coils are designed to prevent it;
  • Describe standards related to medical implants in the MR environment;
  • Describe causes of accidents and preventive measures in the MR environment; and
  • Explain risks and minimization of acoustic noise in the MR environment.
