Weekend Educational Course:
Preclinical MR of Cancer
Organizers: Carles Arús, Ph.D., and Sabrina M. Ronen, Ph.D.

Skill Level: Basic - Intermediate
Saturday, 1 May 2010

OVERVIEW
This one-day course focuses on cancer in preclinical models and integrates MR imaging, MR spectroscopy and MR spectroscopic imaging studies. It is designed for research scientists and physicians (radiologists and oncologists) who wish to be updated on the current state of the art in MR techniques for the investigation of preclinical models. Accordingly, most of the speakers will be PhDs. The first part of the course will be geared to beginners, and will describe the basic ‘how to’ aspects of a range of preclinical methods in different types of models. The second part of the course will be geared to beginners/intermediates, and will cover the application of the methods outlined in part one to preclinical cancer research. It will cover well-established applications and emerging state-of-the-art approaches. Thus it is hoped that the second part of the course will also prepare participants for new cancer-related MR applications that may emerge in the next few years.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course participants should be able to:
  • Recognize the basic MRI, MRS and MRSI technologies which should be available in state-of-the art spectrometers for preclinical cancer research studies, including studies of cells, tissue samples and animal models;
  • Identify potential pitfalls and methodological requirements for carrying adequate preclinical MR studies of cancer;
  • List recognized biomarkers of cancer accessible from preclinical MR studies of cancer models;
  • Describe the principal applications of basic MRI, MRS and MRSI technologies in preclinical cancer research studies;
  • Select MRI, MRS and MRSI biomarkers of cancer to use for modeling diagnosis, therapy planning and therapeutic outcome assessment; and
  • Recognize the added value of multiparametric biomarker analysis in preclinical MR of cancer.
