ISMRM 21st Annual Meeting & Exhibition 20-26 April 2013 Salt Lake City, Utah, USA

SUNRISE EDUCATIONAL COURSE
From Pulse Sequences to Clinical Application in the Brain
SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate
ORGANIZERS: Soonmee Cha, M.D. & Maria A. Rocca, M.D.

OVERVIEW
This session is designed to teach the audience about how various MR imaging methods can be used in the management of patients with acute clinical emergency, neuropsychiatric disorder, or traumatic brain injury. Each session will start with a focused overview of basic physics and technical aspects of specific MR imaging methods followed by a clinical application of these methods for practical use in the three clinical settings. The audience will be able to translate technical advances in MR imaging methods into real-time clinical application to improve diagnosis, assess prognosis, and determine therapeutic options for patients presenting with acute illness, neuropsychiatric disorder or traumatic brain injury.

TARGET AUDIENCE
MD's and PhD's with an interest in clinical problem solving with MR imaging in the setting of emergency situation, neuropsychiatric disorders, or traumatic brain injury but may need a more focused overview of MR imaging techniques for these specific clinical environment that can be applied to improve diagnosis and management of patients.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Formulate fast and ultrafast MR imaging protocols for clinical use in the emergency room setting;
  • Become familiar with practical application of fMRI for understanding various neuropsychiatric disorders;
  • Describe basic physics and clinical application of diffusion tensor imaging in patients with traumatic brain injury;
  • Assess strengths of noninvasive MR imaging methods in the emergency room setting;
  • Recognize potential clinical application of fMRI in formulating specific treatment strategy in patients with neuropsychiatric disorder; and
  • Discuss the role of DTI metrics as a potential biomarker of severity and prognosis of mild traumatic brain injury.
