OVERVIEW
This 50-minute course focuses on the technical aspects of MRI-guided high focused ultrasound (MRgHIFU) therapy and its use for the ablation of uterine fibroids. The basic principles of MRgHIFU will be discussed including technical requirements, effect on tissue, and preliminary experience in the use of this technique to treat a variety of diseases. The use of MRgHIFU in the ablation of uterine fibroids will be discussed in detail including the clinical applicability and research opportunities. All presentations feature didactic–interactive lectures using audience response technology.

TARGET AUDIENCE
This course is aimed at radiologists who wish to introduce new disease classifications, management strategies and techniques into their body MR practice. The course content will also be of interest to MR technologists and clinical support scientists involved in body MRI.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the basic concepts of MR-guided high focused ultrasound and opportunities for translational research and clinical applications; and
  • Compare and contrast the usefulness of MR-guided HIFU in the ablation of uterine fibroids to currently employed methods.
