SUNRISE EDUCATIONAL COURSE
Nuts & Bolts of Advanced Imaging
SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate to Advanced
ORGANIZERS: Alexey Samsonov, Ph.D., N. Jon Shah, Ph.D. & Jeffrey Tsao, Ph.D., M.B.A.
Thursday, 04 June 2015

OVERVIEW
This course covers the principles and application of parallel transmission and image reconstruction. For the transmission section, the key topics are the underlying principles, the B1 and E-field behaviors of transmit arrays, techniques for optimizing B1 shimming, and parallel pulse design in the context of local/global SAR. For the reconstruction section, this course bridges theory to practical considerations in implementing high-performance, production-level reconstruction algorithms.

TARGET AUDIENCE
Those with an interest in: 1) practical implementation of production-level image reconstruction algorithms, 2) understanding the physical principles of parallel transmission, B1 shimming and SAR behavior in high-field MRI.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the basic theory of B1 shimming, RF pulse design and behavior of B1/E fields;
  • Illustrate the principles of local/global SARs within the context of RF pulse design and B1 shimming;
  • Compare major methods of RF pulse design for parallel transmission;
  • Understand the connection among different parallel imaging reconstruction algorithms;
  • Select appropriate parallel imaging reconstruction algorithms based on the imaging application;
  • Identify practical performance-limiting problems in parallel imaging reconstruction; and
  • Formulate strategies for mitigating parallel imaging performance problems.
