Sunrise Educational Session: Multiparametric MR for Cancer

Skill Level: Basic to Intermediate

Organizers: Guanshu Liu, Ph.D. & Mark D. Pagel, Ph.D.

Thursday 12 May 2016

Overview
MRI of cancer now involves many different sequence and protocol options. This session will discuss diffusion, perfusion and spectroscopy as multiparametric options. In addition, it will discuss the potential of combining multiple methods in one paradigm to improve tumour detection and monitoring.

Target Audience
This will benefit Ph.D. and M.D.'s who are interested in novel MRI methods for detection and monitoring of cancer.

Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the potential of diffusion MRI for detection and monitoring of cancer;
  • Understand the potential of spectroscopy for detection and monitoring of cancer;
  • Understand the potential of perfusion MRI for detection and monitoring of cancer; and
  • Understand the options for using a multiparametric analysis to identify and monitor cancer.

Characterization of Tumors with DCE-MRI
Wei Huang1
1Oregon Health & Science University
This lecture discusses the common methods for DCE-MRI data analysis, the clinical applications of DCE-MRI in cancer imaging, the major factors that cause variabilities in estimated DCE-MRI metrics and affect utility in cancer imaging, and the potential of the Shutter-Speed DCE-MRI method for imaging tumor metabolic activity.

Multiparametric Classification of Tumors
Julio Cárdenas-Rodríguez1
1Departments of Medical Imaging and Biomedical Engineering, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ, United States
In this lecture I will describe the statistical principles to use multiparametric MRI to classify tumors. I will also discuss the most common mistakes made during the training of predictive models based on imaging data, and will propose best practices to increase the predictive value of multiparametric MRI.
