Sunrise Educational Session: Interventional MRI: Oncology & Neuro

Skill Level: Intermediate

Organizers: Michael S. Hansen, Ph.D. & Viola Rieke, Ph.D.

Thursday 12 May 2016

Overview
This sunrise course will provide the participant with an overview on the current status of oncological interventional procedures and biopsies. Neuro application, including image guided surgery for the resection of brain tumors and placement of DBS electrodes will be discussed.

Target Audience
This course is aimed at both physicists and clinicians interested in interventional MRI.

Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Assess current oncological interventional procedures; and
  • Evaluate the clinical role of MRI guided neurosurgery.

Oncology & Biopsies : A Story in Prostate Cancer
Cynthia Ménard1,2

Diagnostic MRI is increasingly adopted in the care and management of patients with suspected or known localized prostate cancer.  We will review both MRI-informed (i.e. offline) and MRI-guided (i.e. online) strategies to needle guidance for diagnosis and therapy.  The current state-of-the-art in actuated and robotic interventional devices will be discussed.  Finally, the importance of image-guided biopsies in oncology in general will be emphasized.

Neuro Applications
Karl K. Vigen1

MRI provides information that makes it uniquely suited as an imaging modality for guiding neuro interventions.  Several MRI systems have been designed or adapted to help guide neuro interventions; and specialized accessory hardware has been developed as well.  Applications included conventional tumor resections, biopsy, DBS lead placement, laser placement and ablation, agent delivery, and focus-ultrasound applications.
