Monday, 17 May 2021
Concurrent 7 16:00 -  17:00 Moderators: Lotte Bertelsen
Skill Level: Basic to Intermediate
Session Number: S-01d
Parent Session: Preclinical MRI

Session Number: S-01d

Overview
This session will focus a growing need for and interest in preclinical MRI of fixed tissue. The goal of this session is to present the state of the art and example of use of this new tool for histological examinations.

Target Audience
The session is aimed at a wider audience and is not organ- or disease-specific and should be of interest to students/physicians and researchers interested in preclinical applications.

Educational Objectives
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
- Recognize the value of MR histology for animal research;
- Recognize the value of MR histology for human research; and
- Recognize the limitations of MR histology.

MRI is capable of producing three-dimensional images at resolutions from sub-millimeter to a few microns and has long been recognized for its potential to augment histopathological evaluations. Investigation of sub-cellular structures by MRI provide the best examples of MR histology. The MRI signal is also sensitive to many changes seen in pathology, even though some of these signal changes may not be very specific. Improvements in MRI hardware and techniques make MR histology more accessible to investigators.
