Overview
Synthetic MRI and MR fingerprinting have the potential to essentially change the way we image brain diseases (and, for that matter, pathology throughout the body). Next to obtaining imaging data that can be used for quantitative assessment -- using e.g. radiomics and other machine learning techniques -- these techniques are also a new means of significantly shortening MRI exam times. This session will provide a brief overview of the methods behind synthetic MRI, MR fingerprinting, and other quantitative/synthetic MR imaging techniques that have been published in recent years, and discuss clinical applications of these techniques in the brain as well as challenges for implementation into routine clinical practice.

Target Audience
Scientists and clinicians not yet familiar with synthetic MRI, MR fingerprinting, and similar techniques, who want to have a comprehensive overview of the mechanisms behind these techniques and understand the clinical benefits these techniques could provide.

Educational Objectives
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
- Summarize the main technical methods behind synthetic MRI, MR fingerprinting, and other quantitative/synthetic imaging techniques;
- Identify clinical applications of these techniques in the brain; and
- Explain the major implementation challenges of these techniques for routine clinical practice and describe possible solutions.

Synthetic MRI is gaining interest as a way to perform a rapid comprehensive MRI exam, and more vendors have added synthetic MRI capabilities to their product portfolios. This talk provides a brief overview of the methods behind synthetic MRI.  We will learn about two main ingredients of synthetic MRI: the signal models of commonly acquired weighted image contrasts, and rapid multi-parametric quantitative mapping sequences, including MR fingerprinting. We will explore emerging synthetic MRI contrasts for neuroimaging applications. Finally, we will cover the challenges of robustness, accuracy, and reproducibility in multi-parametric quantitative MRI and synthetic MRI, and their potential solutions.

Quantitative assessment of brain tissue properties could improve tissue characterization, disease diagnosis, follow-up, and treatment efficacy. MR fingerprinting and synthetic MRI are the two current most prominent quantitative MRI techniques that enable simultaneous quantification of multiple tissue property maps in a single acquisition in a clinically acceptable time. Here, we review the fundamental principles and highlight clinical validation and recent clinical applications of these techniques in the brain.
