Overview
This course intends to introduce the novel and advanced techniques for the acceleration of MRI, including compressed sensing, simultaneous multiple slice imaging, and ultra-fast sequences. This session was organized to: 1) explain how these MR techniques work; and 2) describe the potential impact of these fast MR imaging techniques on clinical imaging.

Target Audience
MR scientists, engineers, and clinicians who would like to apply the related techniques to accelerate the MRI in their sites.

Educational Objectives
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
- Explain the fundamental concepts related to the techniques that used to achieve faster MRI;
- Identify the advantages and disadvantages of various types of acceleration techniques and potential artifacts that are associated with the techniques; and
- Describe how to develop and implement fast imaging MR protocols at their site.

MRI is a powerful but inherently slow imaging technique. Methods of scan acceleration such as compressed sensing or simultaneous multi-slice imaging have significant benefits for both clinical research and diagnostic radiology but the way in which accelerated imaging can be validated and exploited varies between the two activities. This talk concentrates on acceleration by compressed sensing and asks the questions: for a specific measurement in clinical research, how do we define the acceptable degree of acceleration that should be used? And how does this differ if we are performing diagnostic imaging?

The presentation walks you through the most widely used MRI acceleration methods in practice. The basic principles and working of these methods are explained in brief. The latest research areas are explored and consolidated to cover the directions in which the MR community is heading to develop accelerated imaging methods.
