Moderators: Elmar Merkle & Michael Atalay
Session Number: M-Sust

Overview

This session aims to provide attendees with an overview of the current and future challenges for environmental sustainability for MRI. MRI has an enormous demand for energy compared to other imaging modalities, as well substantial environmental impacts beyond the scanner energy use. Given the pressing threat of climate and ecological emergencies, addressing these challenges to improve the environmental sustainability of MRI is of both crucial and urgent.

Target audience

All ISMRM members who would like to learn about the challenges and be involved in improving the sustainability of MRI.

Educational objectives

· To learn about the current environmental challenges with regards to the health of the planet and its people.
· To learn about the current environmental challenges with regards to MRI: energy use for data acquisition, analysis and storage, travel and conferencing, waste management and helium use.
· To discuss actions and strategies to reduce the environmental impact of the MRI community.
