Overview
Is there a role for MRI in the imaging of acute body trauma? In this session you will hear opinions both for and against from perspectives provided by M.D. and Ph.D. scientists and clinicians–and then can make up your own mind.

Target Audience
Both clinicians and research scientists who are interested in learning about the role of MRI in acute body trauma.

Educational Objectives
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
- Describe the requirements for obtaining MRI in patients with acute body trauma;
- Discuss the specific technical challenges of acquiring MRI for acute body trauma, including low vs. high field systems, fast acquisitions, and abbreviated protocols; and
- Demonstrate appreciation for the specific clinical indications where MRI is (and is not) preferred, including issues around safety.

A particular emphasis is placed on the critical role of MRI in the evaluation of traumatic injury of the spine and the extremities. The added value of MRI compared to other imaging modalities, such as radiography and CT, to demonstrate significant injuries that require immediate attention and treatment, will be demonstrated. Implementation of MRI in the acute trauma setting can be enhanced by rapid MRI protocols.
