Overview:
Innovations in portable and accessible MRI, including ultra low-field (ULF) and autonomous MRI (aMRI), are taking MRI into communities and countries that have historically been underserved and underrepresented. But these breakthroughs raise ethical, legal, and societal issues (ELSI) including safety, image interpretation, and management of incidental findings. This interactive symposium will provide ISMRM members with an opportunity to learn new strategies to address ELSI challenges, based on on-going work to expand MRI access in Africa and a 4-year NIH BRAIN (NIH RF1MH123698) project, which has recently developed a toolkit with 15 ELSI recommendations.
This symposium on ELSI challenges is a natural complement to the many ISMRM 2025 presentations that will explore innovative MRI systems to reduce cost, scan outside the hospital, and expand MRI access.
Anticipating ELSI issues, from the conceptual and design stages through deployment, and developing more robust community engagement strategies, will ultimately accelerate the ethical use of portable and accessible MRI.

Target Audience:
This symposium is designed to engage those who are both developing and deploying portable MRI for use outside the hospital / lab setting.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

• Identify key ethical, legal, and societal implications associated with their development and use of portable and accessible MRI;
• Describe various strategies for improving community engagement around portable and accessible MRI development;
• Develop better strategies to address ELSI issues such as ensuring research oversight, planning for incidental findings, and protecting data privacy; and
• Discuss resources available to MRI developers for developing plans to proactively identify and address ethical concerns.
