PLENARY LECTURES
Hemodynamic and Metabolic Responses to Neuronal Activity

Ballroom A
08:15 – 9:30

Chairs: Chrit T. Moonen and Kamil Ugurbil

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this session participants should be able to:

• Describe the metabolic reactions that support neuronal activity;
• Explain compartmentation of metabolic reactions among the different cell types that are present in the brain, and the significance of this compartmentation in neuronal transmission;
• Apply and interpret the information available from MR spectroscopy with respect to the abovementioned metabolic correlates of neuronal activity;
• Describe the coupling of metabolism to the hemodynamic response elicited by neurotransmission;
• Assess the current state of understanding of how neurovascular and metabolic events affect signals detected in functional neuro imaging with MR.
