EDITOR'S LETTER

Signals Editor

“The SMRT is expanding collaboration with other organizations who strive for professional development and education.”

Welcome to E-Signals, the quarterly electronic newsletter produced for the membership and those who support the efforts of the SMRT. Although the majority of the membership currently resides in North America; the SMRT is truly an international organization as evidenced with articles written for this issue of Signals by individuals from six different countries.

We begin with President, Ben Kennedy, who hails from Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. He shares his thoughts about the current and trending status of the SMRT with the readers. His leadership stresses the efforts of those involved in educational programs and those helping to enhance social media connections.

New for the SMRT is the position of Safety Officer. Past President Vera Kimbrell, from Easton, Massachusetts, USA, has accepted the responsibility and is already hard at work on our behalf. Her report outlines the many areas of participation by the SMRT that are related to safety and safety education.

Rhonda Walcarius, from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is serving as 2014 Annual Meeting Program Chair. She has her committee well engaged in the planning of the didactic sessions. She entices us with the variety of educational opportunities that will be available for attendees.

The 2014 Education Committee, Chaired by Sheryl Foster, from Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, has been reviewing processes and procedures. Her invitation to participate in the Annual Meeting is open to members and non-members alike. She points to additional resources available to members and non-members on the SMRT website.

ISMRM Fellow and a frequent contributor to the MR Technologist list serve, Emanuel Kanal, (Manny) Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, shares his view on the world-wide Helium shortage. We appreciate his continued support for MR Technologists and Radiographers and his frequent participation with the SMRT is welcome.

From Glostrup, Denmark, Global Relations Chair, Helle Juhl Simonsen, shares important news about MRI practice in Europe. The MRI technologists in Europe have been waiting for this resolution for more than 10 years. The official press release is available on the SMRT website.

The SMRT is expanding collaboration with other organizations who strive for professional development and education. This is thanks in large part to the efforts of Cindy Comeau, External Liaison, who recently relocated to Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA. Cindy and her committee have partnered with the Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging professionals to distribute information. She also shares the SMRT association with the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

We hear again from Past President Vera Kimbrell who invites us to nominate candidates for the SMRT Policy Board. She has prepared an explanatory PowerPoint presentation which is on the SMRT website for your reference. Your nominee could facilitate the future of the SMRT!

Glasgow, Scotland, UK, is the current home of Publications Chair Vanessa Orchard. She introduces herself and shares information about the numerous video home studies that are available to view for continuing education credit. Her testimony about participating in the SMRT is heartfelt and literally spans the globe. Perhaps you need to get connected!

The mission of the SMRT focuses on education and no one exemplifies that effort better than home study editor, Anne Marie Sawyer, Stanford, California, USA. The home study discussing Breast DWI marks a milestone; the 60th issue in the home studies series! Congratulations to Anne and the many volunteers who have contributed over the years.

Of course we would not exist without the support and assistance of Jennifer Olson, Associate Executive Director, Mary Keydash, Publications Director, Linda O-Brown, SMRT Coordinator, Sally Moran, Director of Electronic Communications, and the entire staff in the Berkeley, California, USA office of the ISMRM and SMRT.

As always your comments and suggestions as to topics and content are welcome.

Happy Reading!
