Barry Southers, B.R.S.T., R.T., (R)(MR),
a registered Radiologic Technologist and MRI Technologist by the ARRT, is the Lead MRI Technologist and Senior Research Associate at the Center for Imaging Research (CIR), an affiliate of the College of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati, located in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. Barry completed his radiography education at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky in 1992, and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Radiation Science Technology from the University of Cincinnati in 2007. He is currently working on a Master’s Degree in Medical Education at the University of Cincinnati. He is a member of several Radiologic Technology and Magnetic Resonance Imaging societies, including the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) - Section for Magnetic Resonance Technologists (SMRT), the Kentucky Society of Radiologic Technologists, the Ohio Society of Radiologic Technologists, and the Appalachian Regional Society of Radiologic Technologists. Barry has recently begun working with the SMRT to help create a local SMRT chapter in the northern Kentucky, southeastern Indiana, and southwestern Ohio area (mostly the metro Cincinnati, Ohio area and beyond).

Barry has several years experience as a guest lecturer on both the national and international level, as well as published articles on magnetic resonance imaging (RT Image Magazine). In May 2008, his abstract titled “Treatment Response of Quetiapine in Bipolar Mania Using 1H-MRS”, was awarded the 1st Place Award – Research Focus, at the ISMRM – SMRT Annual Conference, held in Toronto, Canada. Barry presented at the 2008 ISMRM-SMRT Annual Meeting as well. He is scheduled to be a guest speaker in an Advanced Neuro Forum at the 2009 ISMRM-SMRT Annual Meeting, to be held in April 2009 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Barry has student teaching experience at the collegiate level, and has recently been offered an Assistant Professor position at the University of Cincinnati, in their College of Allied Health Sciences. He will be creating a curriculum and teaching courses for the MRI section of the Advanced Medical Imaging Technology program, a baccalaureate level degree program designed to formally educate students in MRI, Ultrasound, and Nuclear Medicine. Some of the courses Barry will be teaching include: anatomy and physiology as it pertains to MRI, MRI physics and instrumentation, and MRI techniques and positioning. Barry has been a Radiologic Technologist since 1992, and an MRI Technologist since 1996. He has worked on several different scanner platforms and field strengths. Since 2003, he has worked in MR research, conducting cutting-edge MR Imaging on research subjects. Certain types of studies he has worked in include functional MRI, brain and breast 1H-Spectroscopy, Diffusion Tensor Imaging, phosphorous (
31P) Spectroscopy, and real-time functional MRI and MR Spectroscopy.

E-Signals is a publication by the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine for the benefit of the SMRT membership and those individuals and organizations that support the educational programs and professional advancement of the SMRT and its members. This publication is the compilation of the leadership of the SMRT and the contributions of the staff in the ISMRM Central Office.
