MR Imaging of the Liver

The SMRT Educational Seminars (Volume 12, Number 4), has been approved for 3.0 Category A Continuing Educational credits.

Read the SMRT Educational Seminars (Volume 12, Number 4), "MR Imaging of the Liver" and complete the quiz and official Answer Form at the back of the article. To receive credit the quiz must be completed with a score of 75% or better. Completion of all questions with a passing score will earn a total of 3.0 category A Continuing Education credits.
SMRT members should send the completed Answer Form to the SMRT Education Department for scoring. The certificate will state the CE reference number and awarded CE credits. Members receiving a score less than 75% will be notified and given the option of taking the quiz an additional two times. Members should retain their CE Certificate for their Continuing Education registry requirements.
Educational Objectives
Fatty Liver: Imaging Patterns and Pitfalls
  • Review the risk factors and pathophysiologic features and prevalence of the fatty liver;
  • Discuss imaging-based diagnosis of the fatty liver including ultrasound, CT and MRI;
  • Describe the appropriate MRI sequences, scan parameters and acquisition planes to image the fatty liver to provide detection and characterization;
  • Explain the accuracy for detection and grading of fat deposition;
  • Review the patterns of fat deposition including diffuse, focal and focal sparing, multifocal, perivascular, and subscapular;
  • Describe primary lesions and hypervascular matastases, and perfusion anomalies and periportal abnormalities;
  • Review pitfalls including fat-containing primary tumors, low-attenuation lesions and focal sparing that mimics an enhanced tumor; and
  • Show examples of images and the resultant appearances of the variation in lesions.

Double-Contrast MRI for Accurate Staging of Hepatocellular Carinoma in Patients with Cirrhosis

  • Review the importance of accurate diagnostic imaging of the liver for HCC;
  • Discuss patient selection for this clinical study of patients;
  • Outline the MR imaging examinations in two parts for each of the contrast agents employed in this study;
  • Explain the administration of contrast media both SPIO and gadolinium and the appropriate scan parameters, imaging sequences and acquisition planes;
  • Review the results including staging diagnostic accuracy; and
  • Show examples of imaging using both contrast agents and the resultant presentation of the lesions.

Gadobenate Dimeglumine-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Primary Leiomyoma of the Liver

  • Discuss leiomyoma and its presentation in various systems and imaging modalities;
  • Review a case report of a patient and the examinations conducted at CT and MRI;
  • Describe the MR scan parameters, imaging sequences and acquisition planes for optimum imaging of this lesion; and
  • Show examples of the lesions using CT and MRI.
