Diffusion-Weighted MR Imaging of the Breast

The SMRT Educational Seminars (Volume 16, Number 2), has been approved for 1.50 Category A Continuing Educational credits.

Read the SMRT Educational Seminars (Volume 16, Number 2), "Diffusion-Weighted MR Imaging of the Breast" and complete the quiz and official Answer Form at the back of the article. To receive credit the quiz must be completed with a score of 75% or better. Completion of all questions with a passing score will earn a total of 1.50 category A Continuing Education credits.
 
SMRT members should send the completed Answer Form to the SMRT Education Department for scoring. The certificate will state the CE reference number and awarded CE credits. Members receiving a score less than 75% will be notified and given the option of taking the quiz an additional two times. Members should retain their CE Certificate for their Continuing Education registry requirements.
 
Educational Objectives
Diffusion-Weighted MR Imaging: Pretreatment Prediction of Response to Neoadjuvant Chemotheraphy in Patients with Breast Cancer
  • Review the importance of neoadjuvent chemotherapy in patients with breast cancer;
  • Describe the use of DCE (dynamic contrast enhanced) and DW (diffusion-weighted) MR imaging sequences in breast cancer and applications for patients undergoing neoadjuvent chemotherapy;
  • Outline the MR sequences and specific scan parameters used to best image and detect breast cancer;
  • Describe and show examples of DCE and DW MR images; and
  • Review the image and statistical analyses used to evaluate the MR images.

Differential Diagnosis of Mammographically and Clinically Occult Breast Lesions on Diffusion-Weighted MRI

  • Review the role of MRI in imaging of breast disease;
  • Discuss diffusion-weighted MR imaging and its value in detecting and characterizing breast disease;
  • Describe the MR scan protocol and specific imaging parameters used;
  • Review the image and statistical analysis used to evaluate the MR images;
  • Describe and show examples of dynamic contrast enhanced and DWI images, and ADC maps; and
  • Discuss the lesion visibility on DWI compared to standard DCE images of the breast.

Diffusion-Weighted MRI as an Adjunct to Mammography in Women Under 50 Years of Age: An Initial Study

  • Review the current status of the effect of breast cancer on the population and the role of medical imaging to detect and characterize the disease;
  • Describe the materials and methods used in this study including patients, healthy volunteers, mammography, MRI and ADC maps;
  • Discuss the parameters used in MR imaging and show image examples;
  • Review the image interpretation and statistical analysis conducted including pitfalls encountered; and
  • Describe the results of the study and discuss the outcomes and limitations.
