Accreditation:
The SMRT Educational Seminars (Volume 17, Number 4), has been approved for 2.5 Category A Continuing Educational credits.

Read the SMRT Educational Seminars (Volume 17, Number 4), "Brain MR Imaging Techniques" and complete the quiz.

To receive credit the quiz must be completed with a score of 75% or better. Completion of all questions with a passing score will earn a total of 2.5 category A Continuing Education credits. The certificate will state the CE reference number and awarded CE credits.

Members should retain their CE Certificate for their Continuing Education registry requirements.

Educational Objectives
Clinical MRI of Acute Ischemic Stroke
  • Discuss the purpose of imaging in acute ischemic stroke;
  • Explain stroke physiology including core and penumbra, blood flow and infarction, and timing; show image examples;
  • Review determinants of clinical outcomes including neurological symptom severity, site of arterial occlusion, infarct core volume, and treatment; and
  • Discuss the role of perfusion MRI in the clinical management of patients;

An Introduction to ASL Labeling Techniques

  • Explain the properties of MRI-based perfusion imaging techniques including arterial spin labeling, dynamic susceptibility contrast and dynamic contrast enhancement;
  • Describe methods for labeling arterial blood including continuous ASL (CASL), pulsed ASL (PASL), and velocity-selective ASL (VSASL); and
  • Discuss quantification of blood flow from ASL data.

Perfusion Imaging

  • Explain perfusion measurement and terminology;
  • Describe perfusion measurement with MRI including the use of exogenous contrast agents and arterial spin labeling; and
  • Show image examples.
