line-height: 1.3; margin: 0.15em 0 0.4em;\">M\u0101tai Medical Research Institute, Gisborne-Tair\u0101whiti, New Zealand<\/p>\r\nSamantha is a medical physicist and academic researcher in the field of human brain imaging who has developed technological advances for the improved detection and diagnosis of brain disorders and disease.\r\n\r\nSamantha completed her undergraduate studies in physics at the University of Canterbury, her masters of medical physics at the Queensland University of Technology, followed by her PhD at the University of Queensland in 2006. She then spent 11 years first as a postdoctoral fellow and then as a senior research scientist at Stanford University.\r\n\r\nNow in New Zealand, she has brought together an exceptional team of national and international collaborators, in several medical research initiatives including mild traumatic brain injury, Chiari Malformation, methamphetamine, and idiopathic intracranial hypertension.\r\n\r\nShe recently established M\u0101tai, a medical imaging research and innovation centre, based in a small rural town in Gisborne-Tair\u0101whiti, New Zealand. His early research experience was in neuropharmacology with an internship at the Institute for Pharmacological Research \u201cMario Negri\u201d in Milan, Italy. Dr. Pierpaoli has spent most of his scientific career at the NIH, and he currently the chief of the Quantitative Medical Imaging Laboratory, National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB). Dr. Pierpaoli\u2019s research is aimed at extracting accurate and reproducible biomarkers from data acquired with non-invasive imaging techniques, primarily Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). He is mainly known for his contributions in the field of diffusion MRI applied to brain studies. He is a founding member and past Board of Trustees member of the Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, past Chair of the Flow and Motion Study Group of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, and serves on the editorial boards of several journals. He is Principal Investigator for the Cardiac Atlas Project, a world-wide consortium for the re-use of imaging data. This project has made cardiac imaging examinations available to the community for research into the analysis and population variation of heart disease.
