Overview

Ischemic heart disease is a leading cause of death and its assessment is an important part of clinical cardiac care. The Workshop will provide an update on latest advances in the development and application of CMR for the evaluation of ischemic heart disease. Relevant methods for both imaging and quantifying ischemia using CMR will be discussed along with their validation and potential clinical implications.

The Workshop will cover both contrast-enhanced and non-contrast methods and will emphasize quantitative methods and models towards robust, reproducible and comprehensive perfusion CMR. Another major goal is to facilitate communication between basic scientists and practitioners interested in the pathophysiology of ischemia as well as in technical and clinical aspects of CMR perfusion imaging and quantification.

The Workshop will offer educational overview presentations as well as in-depth discussions on specific aspects of the state-of-the-field by invited experts. It will provide a venue for research presentations by the attendees as well as opportunities to contribute to panel discussions on important issues to be addressed as the field progresses.

Abstracts will be accepted as either brief oral proffered presentations or as posters.

Topics of interest include:

  • Coronary physiology and disease mechanism
  • Coronary microvascular disease
  • Perfusion imaging techniques
  • Perfusion quantification and models
  • Non-contrast methods (BOLD, ASL, Native T1)
  • Validation studies (PET, pre-clinical, Flow, FFR, CFR, IMR)
  • Open questions and research directions on main current technical limitations and clinical needs

The workshop is designed for both scientists and clinicians including scientists, engineers, and physicians interested in using CMR in cardiac research; clinicians involved with management of heart disease, including cardiologists and radiologists; and industry scientists, involved with imaging systems, and image analysis software.

Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe basic coronary physiology and disease mechanisms
  • Understand technical approaches and limitations of CMR ischemia imaging
  • Understand emerging methods for ischemia imaging with and without contrast agents
  • Understand quantification methods, perfusion models, and technical issues
  • Discuss open questions
