ISMRT Masterclass Series: The Basics of Advanced Brain Imaging, Part II: Diffusion MRI
ISMRT Education Session
Saturday, 03 June 2023
Constitution Hall 106
07:30 -  08:00
Moderators: Nina Salman & Adam Scotson
Session Number: ISMRT-MC2
CE Credit

Session Number: ISMRT-MC2

Overview
This masterclass series will introduce the MR physics of advanced brain MR imaging including functional MRI, diffusion MRI, and perfusion MRI. Part II of this series will discuss diffusion MRI.

Target Audience
Radiographers, technologists, radiologists, scientists, and anyone who can benefit from the MR physics of advanced brain MR imaging.

Educational Objectives
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
- Explain the basic physics and physiology of diffusion MRI;
- Explain the clinical applications of diffusion MRI; and
- Explain the challenges of diffusion MRI.

07:30   The Basics of Diffusion MRI Avery Berman

Keywords: Contrast mechanisms: Diffusion, Neuro: Brain connectivity

In this lecture, we’ll learn about the physiological and biophysical processes underlying diffusion MRI, the pulse sequences used to image diffusion, and example applications in clinical imaging and research.

After attending the session, attendees will be able to:

  • Understand how tissue structure impacts the random diffusion of water molecules
  • Understand common acquisition strategies for imaging water diffusion and the typical images that are generated
  • Understand how brain pathology can impact diffusion images
  • Understand how diffusion MRI can be applied in “tractography” for mapping structural brain connectivity
