To Image & Imagine: A Molecular Imaging Journey Through the Cancer Universe
Zaver M. Bhujwalla is the William R. Brody professor at the Russell H. Morgan Department of Radiology and Radiological Science of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Bhujwalla serves as the vice-chair of Research and is the inaugural director of the Division of Cancer Imaging Research in the Department of Radiology. Dr. Bhujwalla co-directs the Cancer Molecular and Functional Imaging Program in the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Bhujwalla holds joint appointments in Oncology, in Radiation Oncology, and in Molecular Radiation Sciences. She has directed the MRB Molecular Imaging Center since 2003. Dr. Bhujwalla’s work is dedicated to the applications of molecular and functional imaging in cancer with a focus on the tumor microenvironment, cancer-induced cachexia, and theranostic imaging.
Dr. Bhujwalla received her B.Sc. in physics from St. Xavier’s College at the University of Bombay. She then completed her M.Sc. in biophysics from the Cancer Research Institute and obtained a diploma in radiological physics from the BARC. She received a J.N. Tata scholarship to complete her M.Sc. and Ph.D. in radiation biology at the University of London, following which she was recruited as a postdoctoral fellow to Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1989.
Dr. Bhujwalla is a 2017 recipient of an NCI R35 Outstanding Investigator Award for her work on “Molecular Imaging and Theranostics of Cancer.” Dr. Bhujwalla directed one of a handful of NCI P50-supported In Vivo Cellular and Molecular Imaging Centers (ICMICs) from 2003-2017. Dr. Bhujwalla was awarded a Gold Medal from the World Molecular Imaging Society in 2017 for her work on molecular imaging of cancer. Dr. Bhujwalla also served as the president of the World Molecular Imaging Society from 2012-2013. Dr. Bhujwalla received a Gold Medal from the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) in 2019 for her work on the applications of magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging in cancer. She is currently serving as a member of the board of trustees of the ISMRM. Dr. Bhujwalla has actively mentored more than 30 fellows and students, many of whom have become well-known leaders in their own right at Johns Hopkins and at other institutions in the U.S. and abroad. She has served as chair of the Career Development Advisory Committee in the Department of Radiology from 2011-2022. She serves as a Specialty Chief Editor-Cancer Imaging and Image-Directed Interventions for Frontiers in Oncology. Dr. Bhujwalla is currently associated with the editorial boards of NMR in Biomedicine, Molecular Imaging, Cancer Biology & Therapy, and Tomography. Dr. Bhujwalla is a Fellow of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, and the World Molecular Imaging Society. Dr. Bhujwalla received an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Society of Asian American Scientists in Cancer Research in 2020. She is also a Distinguished Investigator of the Academy of Radiology Research.

Brain Tumor Imaging & AI: A Clinical Roadmap
Ji Eun Park is an assistant professor at Asan Medical Center’s Department of Radiology and Research Institute of Radiology, in Seoul, South Korea. She obtained her medical degree from Ewha Womans University in 2008 and undertook her radiology training from 2009 to 2013. Her focus on brain tumor imaging began when she joined the research team of brain tumor imaging supervised by Dr. Ho Sung Kim at Asan Medical Center. During this time, she was exposed to advanced MRI techniques such as amide proton transfer-weighted imaging, various methods of dynamic susceptibility contrast imaging, and electrical properties tomography, applied to a large clinical cohort of up to 1000 cases per year with a high standard of image quality.
For over eight years, she has dedicated herself to the study of imaging biomarkers (IBs) for brain tumor imaging, observing which became part of clinical routine while others failed to achieve clinical adoption. In 2019, after being recruited as an assistant professor, she turned her attention to the era of radiomics and artificial intelligence (AI) in brain tumor imaging and began studying the clinical methodology of implementing a given IB into clinics. She has authored several papers in Radiology and Neuro-oncology, namely, “Reproducibility and Generalizability in Radiomics Modeling” (Korean Journal of Radiology, 2019) and co-authored “Methods for Clinical Evaluation of Artificial Intelligence Algorithms for Medical Diagnosis” (Radiology, 2023), which take into consideration the use of radiomics and AI as IBs. She was recognized with several awards and honors including a Young Investigator Award from the Korean Society of Radiology in 2022 and Researcher of the Year from the University of Ulsan in 2021.
Dr. Park’s primary focus recently has been the clinical impact of brain tumor IBs on patients, particularly the localization of viable tumors in metastasis and glioblastoma in the post-treatment stage. Based on her experience with multi-modal MRI, she has been focusing on tumor habitat imaging to demonstrate spatiotemporal heterogeneity and maintain spatial information that can guide future treatment (Clinical Cancer Research, 2021). She will share her exciting journey of brain tumor imaging to clinical implementation and her vision of how AI can enhance existing IBs for prognostic and predictive measurement.

Richard L. Ehman, M.D.

Celebrating the Convergence Science of Medical Imaging
Richard Ehman is a professor of radiology and the Erlanger-endowed professor of medical research at Mayo Clinic. He received his M.D. from the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, completed his residency at the University of Calgary, and pursued fellowships at UCSF and the Mayo Clinic. He joined the Mayo Clinic staff in 1985.
Dr. Ehman is known for his contributions in clinical practice, research, and leadership. He was deeply involved in the early exploration of body, cardiovascular, and musculoskeletal imaging applications of MRI, and he led the clinical body MRI practice at the Mayo Clinic through years of rapid growth. His NIH-funded research program has focused on developing new imaging technologies. As an inventor, he holds more than 45 U.S. patents. His inventions, which include magnetic resonance elastography and methods for reducing MRI motion and flow artifacts, are widely used in clinical radiology practice.
He has served as chair of the Radiology Study Section of the NIH and on the National Advisory Council of NIBIB. He has been awarded Gold Medals for his contributions by the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, the Asian Oceanian Society of Radiology, the Society of Advanced Body Imaging, and the Radiological Society of North America. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors and is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine. He has served as president of the ISMRM, the Academy for Radiological and Biomedical Imaging Research, the Society for Advanced Body Imaging, and the Radiological Society of North America.

Beyond Diagnostics: MR Guides the Way
Clare Tempany currently holds the Ferenc A. Jolesz, M.D.-endowed chair at Harvard Medical School in Boston. She is the director and PI of the NIBIB-funded National Center for Advanced Technologies for Image-Guided Therapy (AT-NCIGT) and medical director of the Advanced Multimodal Image-Guided Operating (AMIGO) suite. Clare is a native of Dublin, Ireland, and a graduate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. After graduating from medical school, she did an internship and internal medicine training in Dublin before leaving to train in diagnostic radiology at Loyola University of Chicago. She did a fellowship in MRI at Johns Hopkins, training with Elias Zerhouni, and joined the Hopkins faculty rising to acting director of MRI. She then joined Ferenc Jolesz and the faculty at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital, where she is now the vice-chair of Radiology Research at Brigham & Women’s leading the department’s research programs.
Dr. Tempany is a diagnostic radiologist with expertise in prostate cancer MR imaging for detection, diagnosis, staging, treatment, monitoring, and image-guided interventions. Her research focuses on all aspects of prostate MR—from acquisition and optimization to image processing, image registration, segmentation, needle navigation, deep learning, and imaging for MR-guided interventions and the challenges from engineering to clinical adoption. She worked with Ferenc to translate the prostate imaging from diagnostics to a series of image-guided interventions. They established three major in bore MR-guided interventional, clinical translational research programs-first prostate cancer MR guided brachytherapy, then the in-bore transperineal MR-guided prostate biopsy and MR guided Focused Ultrasound ablation of focal prostate cancer. These used the pioneering MR operating room with the unique 0.5T Signa SP developed by Ferenc and GEHC. In later years the BWH investigators, led by Ferenc created the NIH funded National Center for Image guided Therapy (NCIGT), The new AMIGO multi-modal (MR, CT US, and PET) facility was opened in 2011 and supports all these research programs. She is the national PI of a multi-center EGOC-ACRIN trial of mpMRI, she is PI of an multi-center industry sponsored clinical trial of MRgFUS in prostate cancer. She is the Co-Chair of the international PI-RADS committee- the group responsible for developing ACR PI-RADS, the new international standard for multi-parametric MRI (mpMRI) of prostate cancer.
She is a long-standing member of ISMRM, serving on the board and for two terms as treasurer and was recognized by the Society receiving the ISMRM Gold Medal in 2021.
