13:30 -  15:30
Moderators: Mary-Louise Greer & Cornelia Laule
Skill Level: Basic to Advanced
Session Number: Tu-05
CME Credit

Session Number: Tu-05

Overview
One challenge with research in general is to make sure we are developing technology and methods to answer the right questions and issues. This session aims to ensure patients and clinical perspectives are clear in the context of developing MR methods and to provide insight and resources as to how to perform patient oriented research and patient engagement. While MS is the focus of this session, the principles around patient oriented research and engagement are expected to translate to all clinical conditions and MR research.

The panel discussion includes session speakers and people living with multiple sclerosis. These people share their unique journeys living with this disease and their experiences as study participants, including the good and the bad of having MRI scans. The audience are invited to explore with them what they consider to be unanswered research questions needing attention.

Target Audience
This session is targeted at both the interdisciplinary researcher who is interested in integrating patient-oriented research more effectively, as well as the Ph.D. researchers who are experts in developing technologies but need to ensure technological developments are clinically relevant.

Educational Objectives
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
- Define and identify features of patient-oriented research;
- Describe how to approach patients and patient organizations to include in research; and
- Develop and guide interdisciplinary teams that answer the most pressing clinical questions.

13:30   What is patient engagement and patient oriented research? Sharon Straus
13:50   Patient engagement: clinician perspective Jiwon Oh
14:10   Patient engagement: PhD scientist perspective Shannon Kolind

Keywords: Transferable skills: Patient engagement, Neuro: Neurodegeneration

Coming from a physics/engineering background, it can be easy to get absorbed in the technical aspects of MRI research to the point of losing sight of the end goal of improving health and wellness for people living with disease or injury. This talk will attempt to highlight ways to engage with stakeholders in research design and execution. It will aim to stimulate discussion around how to improve communication, and to form and fully utilise diverse networks to optimise research for patient care.
14:30   Introduction to Patient Partners and Panel Discussion Mary-Louise Greer
14:50   Panel Discussion
