The ISMRM Open: Promoting Open Science
Member-Initiated Symposium

16:00 -  18:00
Moderators: Francesco Santini & Petra van Houdt
Session Number: MIST-02
No CME/CE Credit

Organizers: Laura Bell, Francesco Santini & Petra van Houdt

Overview:
Open-science projects aim at improving reproducibility of research results and sharing them with the larger community. Within our MRI community, many open science initiatives exist with a focus on software or hardware development, open educational resources, standardization of data acquisition, data sharing platforms, or forums for discussion. Some focus on a particular application or MRI technique, while others are more general.

These initiatives tend to be driven largely by grassroots momentum but may struggle with visibility in larger communities. The annual ISMRM meeting serves as a way to improve the visibility and to inspire researchers to join them which will ultimately accelerate the research. In this symposium, we would like to introduce you to some ongoing open science projects. At the same time, we would like to use this as an opportunity to bring members of open science projects together and discuss experiences. Although the background and applications of projects may vary, there are overlapping issues and challenges where we can learn from each other. For example, how do you keep an active community? Is there overlap in the scope of projects and should they be separate or join forces? What are the funding opportunities for open science projects? What could be the role of the ISMRM?

Target Audience:
Anyone participating at the ISMRM who is interested in learning more about open science can join.

As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
- Identify ongoing open science initiatives within ISMRM;
- Discuss successes and challenges of open science projects; and
- Inspire any researcher that they can join and participate in open science no matter their background.
