ISMRM 21st Annual Meeting & Exhibition 20-26 April 2013 Salt Lake City, Utah, USA

WEEKDAY EDUCATIONAL COURSE
Integrated Comprehensive Approach to the Brain Tumor Patient: A Case Study
SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate
ORGANIZERS: Keith R. Thulborn, M.D., Ph.D.
Monday, 22 April 2013

OVERVIEW
This session is designed to teach the audience about how MR imaging can be used in the management of human brain tumors from diagnosis through treatment. The neurosurgeon, Dr. Jensen, will present clinical questions that must be answered to plan a safe resection in a real clinical case. The neuroradiologist, Dr. Holodny will respond with the imaging procedures that provided answers to these questions and discuss the impact for the patient. The neuro-oncologist, Dr. Colman, discusses his subsequent treatment after resection with radiation and chemotherapy and raises questions would be useful to answer in management during and after treatment. The neuroradiologist, Dr. Pope, will respond with MR imaging answers to these issues. This is a pictorial case discussion designed to connect clinical questions to imaging solutions. The clinical case will be available to the audience on the ISMRM webpage prior to the meeting.

TARGET AUDIENCE
MDs and PhDs with an interest in clinical problem solving with MR imaging but who may not have had experience with this type of decision making. Basic knowledge of brain tumors as a clinical disease is all that is required.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the neurosurgical questions that MR imaging can resolve in the pre-operative stage of treatment and how imaging simplifies the resection;
  • Understand the follow-up treatment following resection of brain tumors of different grades and how MR imaging can be used to address treatment success or failure;
  • Understand the prognosis of brain tumors of different grades and how MR imaging may help with establishing that prognosis;
  • Recognize the different patterns of brain tumor responses to treatment; and
  • Be able to establish appropriate MR imaging protocols for presurgical planning and follow-up MR imaging in brain tumor management in humans.
