Overview
There are several barriers to research participation among individuals from marginalized, rural, and low socioeconomic communities, including specific individual challenges, collective negative views on research held by a community, and barriers imposed by the research design and management. This tutorial will introduce practical tools for building inclusive clinical study populations locally and globally, and within the current research infrastructure (funding, centralized research facilities, management, regulation, etc.). Approaches to reduce barriers to participation in clinical studies including regulatory policies and examples of community-based
programs that enhance participation will be highlighted. Social innovation ideas that create meaningful and lasting solutions will be introduced as a potential framework for creating practical diverse study populations.

Target Audience
Radiologists, scientists, medical physicists, engineers, and technologists at
all career levels.

Educational Objectives
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
- Recognize challenges in creating diverse and inclusive clinical study populations;
- Show opportunities for innovation in study design and management to promote inclusive research participation;
- List practical foundational tools for creating richer study populations; and
- Explain how social innovation concepts can be utilized to strengthen inclusive clinical study designs.

Biomedical research routinely produce broad claims about behavior and body function/dysfunctions based on data drawn largely from western, educated, industrialized, rich and democratic communities, often assuming there is little variation across populations, although the highest burden of chronic diseases resides in low-income and low-resourced communities. Neglecting such populations restricts our ability to characterize the full disease spectrum and understand complex disease pathogenesis, further exacerbating disparities across populations. With the introduction of novel imaging technologies aimed at enabling access to neglected populations, it is now time to reimagine inclusive imaging studies and clinical trials to advance discoveries with far reaching implications.
