Velocity-Selective ASL: From Theory to Practice
Member-Initiated Tutorials

Tuesday, 10 May 2022
ICC Capital Suite 17
14:30 -  16:30
Session Number: MIT-02

Overview
The primary weakness of spatially selective ASL (e.g. PCASL/PASL) is arterial transit time (ATT) from the larger arteries (labeling) to the microvasculature/tissue (imaging). As ATT is comparable to blood T1, the signal can be largely lost by the decay. Also, uncertainty in ATT complicates sequence optimization and quantification. In velocity-selective (VS) ASL, labeling based on blood velocity provides an intriguing option to overcome ATT-related issues; VS labeling works directly to the imaging volume. If the velocity encoding reaches low enough velocities, it can label the slowly moving blood of the microvasculature, eliminating any ATT. The potential benefit may be even greater outside the brain where the arterial supply is complex.
The current effort for publishing VSASL reviews/recommendations by the Perfusion Study Group makes this tutorial timely for those who apply VSASL in their research. Also, this topic is highly relevant to the ISMRM’s focus theme: Cardiovascular Imaging.
This tutorial consists of three parts. In part-1, three lecturers will provide a theoretical basis and discussion on practical issues in 1) General VSASL, 2) VS Inversion based ASL, 3) Acceleration-selective ASL. In part-2, three lectures will share their insight into the application in 4) neuro, 5) body and 6) as MRA. In hand-on in part-3, participants will learn the Bloch equation simulation of various VS labelling modules in the presence of B0/B1 inhomogeneity, eddy current and laminar flow.

Target Audience
Scientists, engineers, clinical researchers and radiologists who are interested in understanding the basics of VS-ASL and the dominant variants of VS

Educational Objectives
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
Understand the basic theoretical mechanism of VS-ASL and the dominant variants of VS labeling strategies|Recognize the potentials and challenges of VS labeling strategies|Describe the suitable clinical application|Designed the Bloch equation simulation of VS labeling module for their future research
