JMRI PUBLISHES EDITORIAL WITH ISMRM RECOMMENDATIONS FOR RELIEVING IODINATED CONTRAST SHORTAGES BY USING MRI AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO CT
On 02 June 2022 the Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (JMRI) published an editorial that emphasizes how MRI is an appropriate, timely, and cost-effective substitute for contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CE-CT) for many clinical indications. The International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) authored the editorial paper in response to recent shortages of iohexol (Omnipaque), the iodinated contrast media most often used for CE-CT and CT angiography.
This shortage, first reported by GE Healthcare in April 2022, highlights supply chain vulnerabilities in the delivery of CT-based imaging services and will require a multifaceted approach to lower the impact on patient care. The ISMRM paper provides specific examples of when MRI exams can replace iodinated contrast-enhanced CT – increasing the availability of iodinated contrast for applications where substitution is not recommended.
