I periodically go through my spam email folder to see if anything important has been misdirected (although the opposite is far more likely).  One interesting email came from a law firm who had initiated a suit against Anthropic for using AI training data without permission.  Seemingly included in this training data was a book I had written.  Why they would train generative AI off a Radiology textbook seems like an obvious question, but nonetheless I signed on for my participation in the class action. I felt good that someone was looking after my rights, whatever pittance may come from it.

When I was a kid there wasn’t all that much to do in my town. The local movie theatre was about it.  So, we would ride our bikes one town over, to the mall.  That mall still exists but interestingly it is much more upscale now.  It was/is called the Walt Whitman Mall.  The fact that it was on Walt Whitman Road should have been a clue to me that the mall was named after an important person, but I failed to make that inference.  Hence, I never visited his birthplace/museum that was across the street.

Walt Whitman was indeed a person of import, considered the best poet of his time, and to this day, one of the greats of American literature. Walt Whitman’s most famous line comes from the aptly titled “Song of Myself” and resonates with the different person I am today.  That simple, but evocative line is “I contain multitudes.”  Three words that encapsulate the intricacies of the human condition.

Generative AI has gotten very, very good.  In science, it is more of a source of good than of bad.  It can act to flatten the academic playing field in a positive way. AI has already changed our lives in fundamental ways, and we are just at the beginning.

I do wonder if someday, perhaps already, an AI prompt might lead to a pretty good column, similar to this.  After all, Claude was partially trained on some writings of mine.   Would that AI generated column have adequate complexity?  Would it be insightful?  Would it contain multitudes?  Although I am curious to test, I am kind of afraid of what I will find.
