We had a JMRI editorial leadership meeting two months ago and it was mentioned in passing that many of our editors look at the figures before the text of the manuscript. Beckons back to the old debate about which song writers create first: the melody or the lyrics.
I am a lyric guy; to me that’s the crux of a song. Hence, I really admire a paper which is well written. Great paragraphs, phrases, and sentences fascinate me.
A few years ago, I was in an editors’ educational meeting and to make “small talk,” I mentioned (and then repeated) a sentence that I thought was just beautiful. The other editors in attendance clearly thought I was from outer space. They must have been melody people.
I guess this interest in syntax started when I was a kid and there was an empty lot at the end of my block, with numerous realty signs. Each began with the name of their firm, then the second line was “real estate.” I spent hours wondering how two words (real and estate) could be the equivalent of one word.
In many languages, they combine several words into one very long one-Welsh, Icelandic (as well other Nordic languages), and German come to mind. In English we tend to abbreviate (fMRI, FSE, GRE, SENSE, EPI-among many, many more), rather than create compound words. However, in MRI there are a few- spectroscopy, (MR) enterography, (MR) angiography, (close to my heart) musculoskeletal, even workstation. However, much of the time we still implement the two words equal one word precept-“spin echo”, “high field”, “wide core”, “phased array” even “Magnetic Resonance”.
Based on our linguistic history, over time these two words will inevitably merge. Pertinent for the season that just passed Holiday began with two words Holy Day, two centuries ago. Maybe in a few centuries, or (with how fast science has accelerated), decades Magneticresonance will be one word, or am I speaking Klingon?

Technologies and Strategies for Metabolic and Molecular Imaging With Hyperpolarized MRI
Alixander S. Khan, Christoffer Laustsen
Page: spcone | First Published: 16 January 2026
Overview of metabolism that can be probed with hyperpolarized tracers. Pyruvate lies at an important fate of metabolism with several different products offering insights into several enzymes. The labeling position of choice determines the metabolites able to be measured. Fumarate and malate are two important intermediaries in the TCA cycle where measurement offers an insight into cellular death. By Khan and Laustsen (310–327).
