I have always hated my accent. It’s like a mark of Cain that forever identifies where I am from and my background. I often yearn that I would speak like a newscaster, or even someone from the south (perhaps not the Deep South).

I am flying home to Michigan tonight from my uncle’s funeral.  He was an extraordinary man, and I will miss him. Our families were very close. Many of my relatives were there, and they pronounced words just like me. I rarely noticed it before. One doesn’t tend to observe, let alone explain, the outliers when most of the datapoints are in the center.

On the way in, I took the subway from the airport. This subway ride was the first for me in quite a while. Just like my accent is glued like a shadow to me, my subway “spidey sense” is epoxied there as well. On the transit car I was in was a homeless man sprawled out, passed out on the train bench. The native New Yorker in me reflexively turned away and avoided eye contact while sitting directly across. As the train filled, it became obvious that this sleeping gentleman was taking up valuable, sittable, real estate.

A young man, dressed all in black, with a mask covering the bottom half of his face, woke the non-domiciled man up. “Hey dude, there are people standing-could you make some room?” The homeless man, on an opiate “nod” woke up briefly, sat up straight, then passed out again.

The man dressed all in black got off the same stop as me, near the Queen’s County courthouse. He was speaking on his cell, castigating a colleague, about an unknown third worker. “Man, he has gotten soft.” “He has got to toughen up to get the job done.” “He thinks too much of where he comes from and isn’t harsh enough.”

JMRI submissions are triple what they were when I started editing. Hence, I write far too many letters explaining why a given paper received a lower priority for publication than I would like. I abhor writing these rejection letters. As someone who has gotten more papers, over the years, sent back from journals than nearly anyone, I can’t help but remember where I come from. Many of these papers are better, some far better, than ones I wrote early in career.

But science has gotten much more competitive. One has to toughen up, to get the job done. I try hard, however, never to be harsh and not to forget where I came from. Every time I open my mouth, my ears hear a reminder.

MISL maps (slice 5–12) at (a) –20 ppm and (c) –10 ppm were collected from the brain of a 41-year-old female HC subject and a 47-year-old female MS patient. Comparison of MISL signals between HC (n = 15) and MS (n = 12) groups at (b) –20 ppm and (d) –10 ppm. An unpaired Student’s t-test was used. HC: healthy control; MISL: magnetization transfer indirect spin labeling; MS: multiple sclerosis. By Wang et al. (759–771).
