Call for Participation: ISMRM Ad Hoc Sustainability Advisory Committee (S.A.C.)
Deadline to Volunteer:
We are excited to invite expressions of interest to join the newly-formed ISMRM Ad Hoc Sustainability Advisory Committee (S.A.C.). The committee’s primary goal is to assess the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats related to the sustainability of magnetic resonance imaging/spectroscopy in its broadest sense. Initially, the committee will be active for one year.
The S.A.C. will explore various aspects of sustainability in MRI, including but not limited to:
- Maximizing Energy Efficiency: Deliberate designs aimed at minimizing energy consumption without compromising diagnostic quality. By prioritizing energy-efficient equipment, we can significantly reduce operational costs and environmental impact.
- Resource Optimization: Minimizing the use of resources such as water, helium, and other raw materials. We seek technologies and practices that optimize resource utilization, minimize waste generation, and promote recycling and responsible disposal of materials.
- Life Cycle Assessment: Considering the entire life cycle of MRI systems, from manufacturing and transportation to installation, operation, and end-of-life management. Our goal is to evaluate the environmental impact at each stage and select systems that demonstrate a commitment to reducing their carbon footprint throughout the entire life cycle.
- Eco-Friendly Construction: Examining the materials used in MRI system construction, including magnets, shielding, and other components. We aim to identify systems that incorporate sustainable materials, avoid hazardous substances, and adhere to environmentally friendly manufacturing processes.
- Product Life Extension: Emphasizing the design of MRI systems for durability, longevity, and upgradability. We seek systems that can be easily upgraded or retrofitted with new technologies, reducing the need for frequent replacements and minimizing electronic waste.
- Responsible Disposal: Addressing the end-of-life management of MRI systems. This includes encouraging vendors to develop take-back programs or establish partnerships with recycling facilities to ensure responsible disposal of equipment and components.
- Operational Efficiency: Optimizing workflows and scheduling of MRI procedures to minimize idle time and maximize utilization. Efficient scheduling reduces energy consumption, increases patient throughput, and optimizes overall facility efficiency.
- Data Management Efficiency: Implementing efficient data storage and management practices to reduce the need for excess physical storage space and enhance data accessibility. We encourage the exploration of digital archiving solutions and cloud-based platforms to minimize reliance on physical media and paper records.
- Collaboration and Industry Initiatives: Engaging with vendors and participating in initiatives focused on sustainable healthcare practices. We aim to stay updated on emerging technologies and trends that promote sustainability in MRI and foster collaboration with manufacturers and researchers.
- Sustainability of ISMRM/ISMRT Activities: Considering the sustainability of the ISMRM/ISMRT’s various activities, including the annual meeting, workshops, and planning meetings.
The committee’s tasks include:
- Documenting existing initiatives to improve sustainability and to promote these to the ISMRM/ISMRT membership;
- Recommending opportunities to further enhancing sustainability; and
- Developing activities at the annual meeting to promote sustainability, for example: focus groups, the use of “ISMRM Challenges”/competitions for innovative solutions to improve sustainability.
If you are passionate about sustainability and its vital role in the future of MRI, we encourage you to join us in this important endeavour. Please express your interest by 10 September 2024 by completing the form below.
Thank you for considering this opportunity to shape the future of sustainable MRI practices.
Sincerely,
Margaret Hall-Craggs
