I was in the registration line in Cape Town with a very senior member of the society. They made an off-hand remark that they never attach their conference ribbons. I was surprised by this remark and stated to this individual that they had earned these acknowledgements for the work they had performed for the society, and should wear them with pride. Like a general with a chest full of medals.
I was on an editorial board meeting call (for a different journal than JMRI), and they were discussing how to encourage reviewers. I suggested giving out reviewer acknowledgement ribbons at their meeting-like our best JMRI reviewers receive. Boy, did they shoot me down. They said that wearing ribbons was outré to their membership. They analogized it to a dog wearing a champion ribbon at the Westminster Dog Show. No researcher wanted to appear like a dog-even a prize winning one.
On the long plane ride to Cape Town for the ISMRM, I cycled through mostly B movies. One was entitled “Is This Thing On?” It is a movie about the lead character’s midlife crisis. In response to this crisis, he starts working as a stand-up comic. In one “bit,” he expresses out loud who he would least like his soon-to-be ex-wife to date. The first (negative) choice, he says, was a Radiologist. He explained to his Comedy Cellar audience, that Radiologists are noble and make a lot of money. The implication being that he might not look so great in comparison. To be honest, I think he meant Therapeutic Radiologist—but for a moment I like to think that he was referring to my ilk. However, both are noble. Helping patients who never see you, who never get a chance to appreciate your insights, is pretty noble. A famous philosopher from the 1100’s, Maimonides, said that giving charity to a recipient who doesn’t know who provided the help is a higher level of charity. In a way that’s what imagers do.
Reviewing papers (especially when blinded), providing service to a society, making a great diagnosis without consideration of recognition, seems to fit the core definitions of noble. Shakespeare had King Henry V walk among his troops in disguise before the Battle of Agincourt. Shakespeare sought to both physically and metaphorically take off the trappings of royalty. Some Nobles are noble.
Imagers are incognito to our patients. Being ribbonless, being unsung, are pretty high forms of dedication. I can’t help but admire that.

Ventilation defect, fractional ventilation (FV) and coefficient of variation (CoVFV) maps of four representative CF participants in all four visits. Lung clearance index (LCI) and forced expiratory volume in one second, percent predicted (FEV1%), values for each participant are shown beneath their respective images. Two participants with a trajectory towards increasing CoVFV over time (A: 14-year-old male; B: 18-year-old female) and 2 participants without the trend (C: 14-year-old female; D: 16-year-old female). Green arrows point to an example of a persistent feature between visits. By Alam et al. (1652–1661).
