When I was a third-year medical student doing my surgery rotation, the chief resident would start each day with the following dictums. “Why walk when you can stand? Why stand when you can sit? Why sit when you can lie down? And why lie down when you can sleep?”
The principle was being a resident was hard, and conservation of energy was paramount. The first law of thermodynamics.
The last few years, I have spent the bulk on my time on the other, non-medical side, of the campus. I am an introvert by nature, and even if I wasn’t, that chief resident dictum has guided my life. Saying less is saying more. It often seems like many faculty and administrators feel the opposite. I find it exhausting to sift through all these words to reach the deeply buried kernel of their point.
I have probably used this purported Mark Twain quote before. “I am sorry to write a long letter as I didn’t have time to write a short one.” But when you research that quote, it has been misattributed and was likely coined by Blaise Pascal, the French Mathematician. Quite appropriate that the quote comes from a scientist.
When we edit, we take more verbiage out than we ask for in additions. The first law of thermodynamics deals with the conservation of energy. The first law of academic communication deals with conservation of scientists’ time. Why read when you can think?
