Melbourne Airport is located just 20 kilometres which is approximately 20 minutes from the city centre, and services direct national and international flights daily.

Airport transport options

Transport services such as buses, taxis, car hire and rideshare services are conveniently located at Melbourne Airport. Please visit Getting to & from the airport | Melbourne Airport to view the options.

Public Transport

Melbourne has an extensive public transport system of buses, trains and trams. Public transport is the easiest and best way to get around the city. Buy a Myki smartcard for flexible travel between trains, trams and buses. You’ll be able to use public transport in and around the city for just a few hours or all day.

In the Free Tram Zone, you don’t need to use your myki card. The Free Tram zone includes the city centre and extends from Queen Victoria Market to Docklands, Spring Street, Flinders Street Station and Federation Square.

Plan your trip, buy or top up your Myki card online and download maps and timetables from Public Transport Victoria

Free Tram Zone

In the Free Tram Zone, you don’t need to use your myki card.

Trams in the Central Business District Grid, including the Docklands, are FREE OF CHARGE. Tram stops within this participating area will be labelled with ‘Free Tram Zone’ signage.  There is no need to “tap on and off” trams when boarding and alighting within this grid.

IMPORTANT: Trams from stops outside the University of Melbourne are NOT within the ‘Free Tram Zone’ so you must ‘tap on’ if you board from these stops.
