My son got called to jury duty last week.  I have been summoned myself, but each time was not chosen.  Friends who have done this civic duty seem invigorated.  Yes, it’s a hassle.  But they found the experience of being completely objective and fair overall interesting, pleasurable, perhaps dopamine releasing.

Quite a few years ago, I was asked to do a lecture “on tape”.  After getting over the surprise of trying to talk about images, without images- I accepted the challenge.  I wrote an outline and headed into a recording studio in center city Philly. Surrounded by eggcrate foam, I proceeded to haltingly, inarticulately present my imaging lecture with just a microphone.  After I was done the engineer took about an hour to process this verbal mess.  He deleted all my pauses, my mispronunciations, my “ems,” “ahs” and nervous sniffles.  Then speeded me up to 8/7 time and adjusted the frequency so I didn’t sound like Alvin (from the Chipmunks).  He then presented the edited lecture for me to listen to.  Boy did I sound good.  Clear.  Precise.  Without an incomplete word, phrase or sentence in sight.  That’s what a great sound engineer can do.  S/he can make the most ineloquent gent sound like an NPR announcer.

Altogether, “handling” editors are a bit of a juror and a bit of an engineer, with a sprinkling of social manager.  Part of the job is to adjudicate.  With the increasing number of submissions, this becomes ever more challenging.  We try and do this task as blinded as possible-  being as fair and objective as we would expect a juror or judge to be.  Then we edit.  We clip.  We move sentences and paragraphs around.  We sometimes ask for clarification and expansion, but more often we try and distil papers-getting rid of the pauses and incomplete thoughts.  Much like the sound engineer did for me. We end with (I hope) great papers, that read clearly and easily.  Like a judge’s summary if that judge was an English Professor in a former life.  That’s the challenge and the pleasure and being stewards of this great journal.

Multifrequency three-dimensional MR elastography at 5 different frequencies in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and bile duct ligation (BDL) models. Elastograms, wave images, and magnitude images are displayed for the CCl4 (a) and BDL (b) models at five vibration frequencies (200 Hz, 150 Hz, 100 Hz, 80 Hz, and 60 Hz). Wave images demonstrate good shear wave propagation across the liver at all frequencies. The bar graphs summarize the Spearman correlation coefficients (r) of liver stiffness values at different frequencies with histopathological liver fibrosis stage (left) and the positive area of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) (right). *p < 0.05 when compared with the correlation coefficients at 200 Hz.
